Management and guardianship of one of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s most precious resources will be discussed at a two-day research symposium in Christchurch next week.

The research symposium “Tangaroa ki uta, Tangaroa ki tai: Water, our future”, convened by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, New Zealand’s Māori Centre of Research Excellence, and co-hosted with Ngāi Tahu, will showcase research of relevance to water and provide a much-needed national platform for researchers, policy-makers and communities to discuss issues surrounding water.

Researcher receives US exchange for indigenous development

Educationalist, researcher, and company director, Dr Leonie Pihama, is the inaugural recipient of the Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Senior Scholar Award.

One of three new exchange awards in the field of indigenous development offered under a new partnership between Fulbright New Zealand and Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, the award is offered annually to a New Zealand scholar who displays professional distinction, leadership skills and strong ambassadorial qualities and whose area of research or teaching fits within one of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga's research themes.

PŌWHIRI TO WELCOME CHARLES ROYAL TO NGĀ PAE O TE MĀRAMATANGA AND THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND

Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal has recently been appointed Director of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, one of New Zealand’s eight centres of research excellence. He has also been appointed Professor of Indigenous Development in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland. Charles’s appointment commenced the 1st of December 2009.
On the 9th of February, Charles will be formally welcomed upon Waipapa Marae, Wynyard Street, the University of Auckland.

Professors Sir Paul Callaghan and Sir Peter Gluckman honoured in Wellington

Professors Sir Paul Callaghan and Sir Peter Gluckman, both former Chairs of aCoRE, were honoured at a function in Wellington in December.

The evening was attended by representatives of each of the eight Centres of Research Excellence and their Boards, as well as the Vice-Chancellors of their host institutions.

Guest speaker for the event was Minister of Finance and Acting Prime Minister the Honourable Bill English, who read citations and presented greenstone mere to the two men in recognition of their roles as science leaders.

Kidney cancer research grant a NZ first

University of Auckland chemist Associate Professor Michael Hay has become the first New Zealand scientist to receive a grant from a leading international charity for funding cancer research.

Dr Hay and his team at the University’s Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre will use the ₤137,000 ($NZ 290,000) grant from the UK-based Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) to identify molecular targets in kidney cancer tumours that will help them design more effective anticancer drugs.
